“The Kingdom of the Occult”
Deuteronomy 18:9-14

The term occult  is derived from the Latin “Occultus” meaning “Secret or hidden.”

In the time of Moses and Joshua and the preparation of God’s people readying themselves to enter into Canaan, the occult was a serious part of the live’s of the Canaanites.

It was not a part of God’s people and their lives.

It’s strictly forbidden.  The Israelites had lived for nearly 400 years with with occult all around them in Egypt.

They  understand what it was and so did God.

It was a part of pagan worship and demonic involvement.  It was serious and not all at to be partaken of.

In our text which is one of a number in the scripture pertaining to this topic God doesn’t ask his people, he commands them to not entertain nor accept the occult in their lives.

He forbids his people to ever do what the Caanites did.

Never sacrifice your babies and your children in the fires of Molek and Baal.

Do not partake or nor engage in seeking knowledge, wisdom, understanding of any matter of life by supernatural means, by any other means other than faith and trust in Jehovah.

The type of people that practiced these occult practices God identified as:

Observer of times.

These were people who told the future.  Astrology and the watching of the sun, moon, stars and planets in order to gain supernatural knowledge of the future is included in this.

Enchanters, Charmers. These were those who  delved into magic.

Witches, Wizards

These also Enchantes and Charmers but they were more intense in their abilities.

Consults of familiar Spirits.

These were in league with demonic entities that assisted them in gaining information about people, places and things.

A Necromancer.

This was an individual who conjured up the spirits of the dead, albeit it was a demon posing as a dead human being.

God considered all of these as an abomination in his eyes.

Listen closely – what God called sin.  What he called evil, what he identified as an abomination 5,000 years ago, it is still sin, evil and abomination today in 2019.

God forbade his people to engage in, entertain and participate in occult activities and black arts.

In the New Testament nothing changed.  God’s people were told to stay away from these activities.  It was still a practice that God prohibited.

Paul encountered a demon possessed girl in whom she was a seer, a fortune teller, Paul by the name of Christ liberated that girl from that demon in which he cast out.

Converts in Ephesus who came to salvation, who had been in the occult  practices come and burned their spell and incantation books.

When the Holy Spirit displaced to the demonic spirits that were guiding and directing these people thru supernatural means, the Holy Spirit changed their minds and hearts to not be a part of witchery, soothsaying and occult practices.

In the world that we live in the occult is everywhere that you look.

Christian stay away from it.  If you are involved in any way, confess it to God and ask for forgiveness.

WE are not to partake of any of it.

Because these are things that the heathens and the lost do not God’s people.

We are not to make God jealous in our relationship with him what are the 1st and 2nd of the ten commandments.

Seeking secret knowledge and secret power from supernatural sources in a sin, period.

It is the job of the Holy Spirit to lead us into God’s truth.

Don’t be duped, don’t be tempted in these occult practices.

It’s on our televisions, It’s in the movies, It’s on the radio, it’s on our streets.

Here are a few examples of where its found on our television sets:

Charmed, American Horror Story, Witches of East End, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Penny Dreadful, Once upon a time, Supernatural to name a few.

Searching for Ghosts and Demons.  This is dabbling in the occult.

The Dead Files, Haunted Collector, Ghost Hunters, host Stalkers, Most Haunted, Ghost Asylum. Long Island Medium,  to name a few.

Pages on the web:

Occult oracle, the Occult Files, Christian Occultism, Occult Vibrations, Occult Study  New, California Psychics, Psychic Source, Psychic Encounters.

This is a sample of hundreds of sites.

Hollywood glorifies the occult with the likes of:

The Exorcist, Amityville Horror, Rosemary’s Baby, Insidious, The Conjuring, Nightmare on Elm St.

Disney is a purveyor of the occult albeit in a neat and orderly way such as:

Harry Potter, Descendents, Snow White, The Maleficent, Wizards of Waverly Place, Fantasia.

It’s everywhere you look.

There is a dangerous fascination with these things.

The Gothic style, Heavy Metal Rock, Seances, Ouija Boards, Hypnotism, Psychic Readings,  Tarot Cards, Automatic Writing, Astrology and Horoscopes reading, Transcendental meditation, crystals, voodoo, channeling, reincarnation, Astral Projection, ESP.

None of it is from God and none of it should be anything a Christian should do or take part in.

If we do, we are opening up ourselves to spirits other than Gods.

We are turning our backs on Jesus and embracing abominations.

We are risking opening up our minds and spirits to ungodly knowledge.

These are some of the reasons I really don’t like Halloween.

It is an ancient ritualistic celebration.

Its roots stems back to the ancient Celts and their priests called the Druids.

They believed that on October 31st  that the line between the living and the dead was opened and the dead entered into the mortal world.

October 31st was the end of summer and November 1st brought the death of winter.

It was called Samhain or Sowan.

The people would extinguish the hearth fires as evening approached.

The Druids would build giant bonfires and the people would dress up in animal skins and head dress and place the gutted out turnips with embers glowing within and carved  out hideous faces toward of the dead.

They would also place plates of food to appease the spirits.

The poor would go door to door begging called soul cakes.

This was in exchange that they would pray for the families dead.
